Bill Porter
Bill passed away on Wednesday, April 12th, 2006 at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
Bill
was a good friend of the club, always ready with questions, answers
and a good listener. I will miss his patient smile and tolerant acceptance
of my often inept answers to his queries. As a Library Board member
he kept the club visible to library staff. Sure miss you Bill.
We have regretfully lost yet an other valued member. Bill as you know was always eager to help out in him own small way. Be it the phone committee or offering information on library policy or contacts for the library. He also took it upon himself to try and get the BUG meetings posted in the local papers. He was also an eager participant in the Q&A at the meeting. It is members like him that makes the club work Dave J
Bill graduated from the University of Manitoba with a BSc in Electrical Engineering in 1946 and subsequently moved to Toronto where he gained employment at General Electric and met his future wife Eileen. In 1949 they moved to Barrie where Bill worked for Ontario Hydro from which he retired after 40 years of service. During this time Bill also completed an MBA at the University of Toronto. In his retirement years Bill continued "working" by starting a tax business as a second career. During early life in Barrie Bill enjoyed many pastimes, especially sailing at the Barrie Yacht Club and skiing at Snow Valley. In retirement Bill enjoyed camaraderie at the Parkview Centre playing snooker, and his Monday night games at the BCC. Over the years Bill was also involved in Little's Hill Players, Central United Church, Probus, Downtown Development Board, Barrie Users Group and the Barrie Library Board. Bill was also very active in his Class of ’46 reunions. The Family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Beecroft and the nurses and therapy staff of 3SA at the Royal Victoria Hospital for their compassion and understanding. Friends may call at the STECKLEYGOODERHAM FUNERAL HOME, (Clapperton & Worsley Streets), Barrie, from 2-4 pm on Sunday. Funeral Service at Central United Church, 54 Rods Street, Barrie on Monday April 17th, 2006 at 11:09 a.m. Interment Barrie Union Cemetery. The family would prefer donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Royal Victoria Hospital, Regional Cancer Care Centre. Condolences may be forwarded through www.steckleydooderham.com |
