The evening went differently
than expected, with Dave Waddling leading off the program. Dave is our
Linux expert, and demonstrated for us the knoppix-std cd version
of this interesting system, available free from http://www.knoppix-std.org.
The system works entirely from the cd, still allowing complete access
to the host computer's resources.
The second half of the evening
was, in fact, presented by paul Mather (as planned) who discussed the
various accronyms and computer expressions one needs to be aware of prior
to purchasing a computer or doing an upgrade. Both presenters provided
handouts.

Richard Baetchmann,
our annual visitor from Zurich, Switzerland, joined us today. As always,
he took an active part in the meeting, with a presentation of MS Train
Simulator. Last year we saw the original package presented, so this year
it was about add-ons; in particular, the German and Alpine extentions.
Thank you Richard. The balance of the evening was spent with Q and A,
and with planning our future meetings with ideas from the floor.

The BUG
BBQ was a great success with 31 or so members attending. This was
the first BBQ for all members and will definitely not be the last. Highlights,
such as the delicious corn on the cob (Dave), the special 20th anniversary
cake (see picture below), the Joe Smith Memorial Lemonade Cake (Diane
Clarke) and all the other fantastic goodies made for a memorable feast.
And get this, the word "computer" was hardly ever heard. Good
company and a well chosen venue, not to mention great weather (post "hurricane
Isabel) ruled the day. Someone said there was a computer set up somewhere
but no one paid attention evidently.
Members will
behappy to know that the recipe for the lemon cake has been made available
to all, just check out this link, and
enjoy.

Nothing Scheduled
this evening. Most of the night will therefore be devoted to questions
from members. All members are encouraged to both ask questions, and to
help answer them. See you tomorrow night.

Dave demonstrated
the production of panoramas from adjecent, overlapping photos, using the
very affordable Cool 360 program. Mike showed how terrible
photos can be fixed with proper scanning and editing techniques. The programs
udes were PSP6 and Adobe Photoshop Elements.

Please note that this is the second Tuesday; no meeting on Canada Day!
Details: Sean
Mather will present his award winning video, and discuss some of the editing
methods used to accomplish the final product.
As always, please
bring your ideas, your questions, and chime in with answers, particularly
during Q and A

General
Meeting. Mike Clarke demonstrated some of the features of Premiere Desktop
Video and the basic Do and Don'ts of Video.Executive
Elections were held. We are still
looking for a PC Sig Coordinator.
Tuesday,
May 6, 2003
Dave
covered Computer Diagnostics and Maintenance, which was very well received.
Also, there were more items left over from Joe Smith`s stuff to sell to
club members. We also introduced the new SIGs which we are currently working
on, and recorded members who would be interested in joining one or two.
There were no amendments to
be made to the constitution for this year.
Note that The display for Barrie`s
Sesquicentennial will be set of at the lakefront on the 7th of next month.
See events page for more details.

Scanner
Use, part two. Art completed his presentation by scanning and manipulating
images. With more time available he was able to complete his presentation
with plenty of time to spare for questions, and Q amd E.
Note: we are now considering
the formation of SIGs again. These are "special interest groups"
which members can join which cover specific computer-related topics. So
far members have suggested internet, graphics, and video editing as groups.
More at the next meeting.

First
part of meeting about computer upgrades, was presented by United Computer
Superstores of Barrie. The store's owner did a fine job of describing
what to look for in making a computer purchase, very timely since the
club is currently deciding on an upgrade to our aging system.
Scanner presentation by Art
taylor went very well, with Art covering everything we would want to know
about scanners, including scanner types and how to decide on adequate
resolutions according to the task at hand.

Nada .....
We got snowed out!
Tuesday,
January 7, 2003
Dave
Jackson will start off the evening with a slide progrm called "Proshow"
which is supposed to be better (and lots cheaper) than "Powerpoint".
Mike Clarke
will have his computer available to demonstrate programs such as Adobe
Premiere, Dreamweaver, AOL 7, Windows XP, Networking and more.
Also, since
it was originally intended to discuss DSL, Cable and phone connections,
we should have time for discussion of this important topic.
