Your Digital Trail This presentation focuses on the many electronic bits of data we leave behind us every day, often without being aware of how extensive it really is. Of greatest importance is the potential impact that the digital trail can have on your personal information and privacy. Francois van Heerden has created a quick trip through the many layers of data that is being accummulated by businesses and some of the ways in which it can be used and abused. Francois van Heerden The speaker used himself as the target of the investigation to research what can be found on the Internet about a person. He was able to locate content from the mid-1990s that had been placed on the World Wide Web. He shows how to use simple, ordinary tools to find a wealth of information that can lead to Identity Theft or fraud. With the continued penetration of Social Networking with Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, blogging and so on, a person's privacy is at risk unless extraordinary care is taken. These also extends to organizations that allow their staff to access such tools from the office environment.

Your
Questions From time to time we like to give our members and visitors an opportunity to ask their technology questions. Our resident experts will be on hand to provide answers or point you to the answer. These questions can be on any topic that we would cover at BUG, including technology, computers, software, Internet, photography, audio and so on ......... Our members have told us that these sessions are very informative and often they pick up tips and information that is very useful, even though they hadn't thought of the question themselves. In order to provide thorough responses, we encourage people to send their questions to Paul and David or email us at the BUG contact email (follow this link). The more notice we have on questions the better prepared we are! Also, if you are unable to come to the meeting, we will be taping so send in your question and see the response on the BUG DVD. BUG is about learning and this is your opportunity to focus that learning on your needs.

Common Questions at Public Star Nights
All amateur astronomers participate in public star nights - bringing the wonders of the night sky to the general public. Regardless of location, exactly the same questions come up every time. Some are humorous, some are very serious. All are important and deserve to be answered. This presentation will look at the way in which astronomy is changing and starting to use much more advanced computers and technologies while answering the many common questions. Francois van Heerden Francois is an information technology security professional currently working the the Ministries of Community and Social Services and Children and Youth Services. He and the team he works with are responsible for securing all of the information for the Family responsibility Office, Ontario Works and the Ontario Disability Support Program. He has worked in both the public and private sectors deploying enterprise-wide security technologies such as intrusion detection and prevention and web content filtering. Francois has engaged in forensic investigations and the development of policies, procedures and guidelines. In his 36 years in information technology, Francois has come to realize the the most valuable aspect of computers is education, and now devotes a large part of his effort to educating people on the risks to privacy and security associated with the use of the Internet and computers in general. He is an accomplished speaker who has presented at Showcase Ontario (Identity Theft, Social Engineering, Your Digital Trail), Privacy Conferences, and to the public at schools and other organizations. In his spare time, Francois engages in his hobby of astronomy and delivers presentations in the provincial parks to campers, library audiences, boy scouts, girl guides and just about anyone else he can corner into listening. He uses his telescopes and assorted other equipment to present impressive views of the night skies to the campers. Using his computers (a notebook and a netbook), a Mallincam, and other hardware and software, he captures video of the objects he views in the night sky.
Because today’s world is all about “technology”, knowing how to make it work better for us is essential. The real word on MSWord –
is… it’s easier when you know some of the secrets. Together lets learn a few tips
about MSWord and take advantage our PCs. Ellen Rogers Ellen lives in Barrie, she moved here from Toronto 18 years ago. She has 2 children, a son 18, and a daughter 16 – who attend this high school. When her children were young, she was a stay at home parent. Ellen and her husband, a forester for Hydro One own a rustic, water access only, off the grid cottage in Haliburton that they escape to as often as they can. Recently Ellen went back to school as a “mature student” when Georgian College partnered with Laurentian University earning a degree in Gerontology – “the study of aging”. Presently Ellen works for Hydro One’s “Training Department” in Orangeville. This department is responsible for preparing training material for all trades within Hydro One – foresters, lineman, and station maintenance people. Although Ellen works in MSWord all day, she does not consider herself an expert in computers – which is why she joined the Barrie Users Group.
BirdScaping
Learn how to create a habitat in your own yard to attract birds and wildlife. We call this BirdScaping. By creating a habitat attractive to birds you will be able to create your own "wildlife photography studio" in your own backyard. For those without a backyard the concepts can be used in a local community green area. We will also provide some ideas for great birding/photography locations. Most of these are in the GTA but we do know a few "out-of-town" locations. Lynda and Jim Mackiewicz Lynda and Jim have owned Wild Birds Unlimited in Etobicoke since Jan 1991 and avid backyard bird feeders/observers for the past twenty years. They are both "naturalists"; hiking for over twenty years for the purpose of observing birds and wildlife; and camping for the past fifteen years. They have assisted in bird banding, fostered, rehabilitated and then successfully released injured/abandoned birds. Lynda and Jim provide foster care for baby squirrels through the Toronto Wildlife Centre. For one year they wrote the birding articles for the Ontario Gardener and have appeared on Canadian Living TV and Breakfast Television regarding bird habitat and on the CTV national news regarding bat houses and habitat. Lynda and Jim are both avid amateur photographers
